fl uid content ( fi g. 2 ). This fi nding excluded the diagnosis of a hematoma and suggested the hypothesis of hydatidosis or congenital cyst of the spleen. Echinococcosis antibodies were negative so a defi nite diagnosis could not be made and surgical treatment was required. The splenectomy was performed by laparotomy. The spleen weighed 1,080 kg and the fl uid inside it was turbid and yellow in L.P.A., a 13-year-old girl, presented with left upper abdominal pain due to an accidental fall. Ultrasonography (US) showed a cystic mass which appeared to be a hematoma, but the patient was hemodynamically stable. Spiral computer tomography (CT) showed a 20-cm cystic mass of the spleen occupying almost all the splenic parenchyma ( fi g. 1 ). The cyst was septed with smooth wall and Published online: April 14, 2005

Laparoscopic Management of a Ruptured Giant Epidermoid Splenic Cyst
BACKGROUND Epidermoid splenic cysts are uncommon lesions of the spleen. They are known to become symptomatic as a consequence of enlargement, infection, or rupture, the latter being an exceedingly rare complication traditionally treated with open splenectomy. We herein report a unique case of a giant epidermoid splenic cyst that ruptured spontaneously and was successfully treated with the lapar...
متن کاملReport of One Case of Splenic Epidermoid Cyst
SUMMARY The non parasitic benign cysts of spleen are rare iesions and can he divided into two groups, primary and secondary. In the cysts in the primary group an epithelial lining is present. Secondary cysts are far more frequent, accounting for 80% of all splenic cyst. ln this article we report about an 23 year old girl admitted with LLQ pain and feeling of abdominal mass. After splenectomy ...
متن کاملLaparoscopic Resection of an Epidermoid Cyst Arising from Intrapancreatic Accessary Spleen
Context An epidermoid cyst arising from intrapancreatic accessory spleen is rare. Herein, we report the patient who had an epidermoid cyst arising from intrapancreatic accessory spleen with typical imaging features, which was diagnosed by preoperative imaging studies and successfully treated with minimally invasive surgery. Case report A seventy-five-year-old male was referred to our hospital p...
متن کاملTwo Cases of an Epidermoid Cyst Developing in an Intrapancreatic Accessory Spleen Identified during Laparoscopic Distal Pancreatectomy
Epidermoid cysts presenting within an intrapancreatic accessory spleen are rare non-neoplastic cysts typically occurring in the pancreatic tail. This entity is difficult to diagnose given there are many types of pancreatic neoplastic cysts. We herein describe two cases of an epidermoid cyst within an intrapancreatic accessory spleen for which we performed a resection by laparoscopic distal panc...
متن کاملTotal Splenectomy due to an Unexpected “Complication” after Successful Extended Laparoscopic Partial Decapsulation of a Giant Epidermoid Splenic Cyst: A Case Report
Splenic cysts are rare entities and are classified as true cysts or pseudocysts based on the presence of an epithelial lining. Congenital nonparasitic true cysts can be epidermoid, dermoid, or endodermoid, present at a young age, and are commonly located in the upper pole of the spleen. Surgical treatment is recommended for symptomatic, large (more than 5 cm), or complicated cysts. Depending on...
متن کاملGiant epidermoid cyst of the spleen with elevated CA 19-9 production managed laparoscopically: report of a case.
True splenic cysts are uncommon and are associated with elevated serum and intracystic tumor marker CA 19-9 levels. A 33-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a chief complaint of epigastralgia. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a 10-cm cystic lesion in the spleen. The serum carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 level was 3,347 U/mL (normal, <37 U/mL). Total laparoscopic splenectomy wa...
